CIPP Lining Process – 2024 Grant Results

In 2022, the Port Washington Water Pollution Control District applied for a grant of $5.85M to rehabilitate over 16,000 linear feet of gravity sewer main in our system. In 2024, the grant was awarded to us. Lining our sewer lines helps protect the water quality in Manhasset Bay and improve the integrity of the District’s sanitary collection system. We began lining pipes throughout Port Washington in areas we knew were high priority due to aging infrastructure or problem areas due to root intrusion, infiltration, etc.
In late 2025, we detected high Sodium Chlorides coming into our treatment plant. We started back tracking sources from the plant out to our pump stations and collection system until we found heavy concentrations coming from pumping station β€œJ”, located on Yacht Club Drive, After a CCTV inspection of the neighborhood, we found that salt water infiltration into the sewer mains on Beachway was causing the high readings. This area consists of 8 and 12 inch vitrified clay pipe – installed in the early 1950’s – which joints every three feet, exposing it to a large amount of ground water – no matter how high or low the tide. We determined it was a top priority to rehabilitate the pipes with a CIPP (Cured In Place Pipe) liner.
Using funds that we received from the 2024 Grant, we were able to quickly engage Arold Construction, to complete this job. Below you will find links to pictures outlining the process. All in, the job took less than a week to complete. We immediately saw a significant decrease in sodium chlorides in our collection system, and the overall flow to our plant has been reduced.
